On 18 April 2017, DHA announced the abolishment of the Temporary Skilled Work visa (subclass 457) and launched the new Temporary Skilled Shortage Visa (TSS) in March 2018.

The Temporary Skilled Work visa allows:

  1. The employers to address the skill shortage in the labor market and bring skilled immigrants to Australia.
  2. Skilled workers to work in Australia in their nominated occupations for their approved sponsors under three streams:

Short-term stream

This stream is applicable,

  • If the applicant is sponsored by an employer as an overseas skilled worker.
  • If the applicant’s occupation is listed on the Short-term Skilled Occupation list (STSOL) for a TSS visa.

This visa is applicable for minimum 2 years to maximum 4 years (exemptions are for those who apply under Australia’s International Trade Obligations).

Medium-term stream

This stream is applicable,

  • If the applicant is sponsored by an employer as an overseas skilled worker.
  • If the applicant’s occupation is listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL) for a TSS visa

This visa is applicable up to 4 years for the listed occupations.

Labor agreement stream

This stream is applicable,

  • If the applicant is sponsored by an employer as an overseas worker and has entered into a labor agreement.

Eligibility for a Temporary Skilled Shortage visa (all streams):

  1. The applicant must show the required skills and qualifications to fill the position by completing a skill assessment.
  2. Must be nominated by an approved business for an approved occupation.
  3. Meet the English language requirements (requirements vary from stream to stream).
  4. Can get a TSS visa, if he holds a substantive visa, a subclass 010 (Bridging A) visa, a subclass 020 (Bridging B) visa or a Subclass 030 (Bridging C) visa.
  5. Has to substantially comply with any conditions that are applied to the last visa.
  6. Must meet health and character requirements.
  7. Must meet the requirements of the stream.
